Tri-Cities Public Health Unit (Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody)

Service Description

Provides public health services including public health nursing, childhood and adult update immunization, school health, nutrition education, and testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections. Also offers teen prenatal classes, follow-up and support for parents of new babies, and parenting skills education and support to parents of young children. Services for children include dental health services for young children, hearing assessment for children and youth up to age 19, preschool speech development assessment and treatment, nursing support for children with special health care needs, and education to increase community awareness about tobacco use and establish school-based prevention programs. Environmental Health oversees the inspection of restaurants and food service locations, public swimming pools and hot tubs, and businesses providing personal services (such as beauty salons, barber, and tattoo shops) to assure public health standards are met. Also oversees the drinking water program, tobacco enforcement, communicable disease control (enterics), West Nile Virus programs, and onsite sewage management. Community Care Facilities Licensing monitors care facilities for adults and children. The Healthy Babies Program serves high-risk pregnant women, up to six months postpartum, providing counselling, support, and education regarding nutrition, lifestyle, pregnancy, labour, breastfeeding, and other concerns.
