Service Description

Provides services and programs related to chronic and infectious diseases, and education regarding public health issues. Offers screening, assessment, counselling, referral, follow-up and health promotion activities and communicable disease control. Services include speech language pathology, audiology, nutrition and dental health. Programs focus on health promotion, chronic and infectious diseases, tobacco control and enforcement, education regarding public health issues, prenatal and postnatal services and childhood immunizations. Provides telephone access to a public health nurse who can address questions about mother, baby, or family health, and services related to, or provided by, the public health system. Wheelchair accessible. Hours are 8:30 am to 7 pm Mondays and Thursdays, and 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Tuesdays and Fridays. Also houses the Tri-Cities Health Protection Office which operates from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday. Within this office, Community Care Facilities Licensing monitors licensed care facilities for adults, and for children/youth. Environmental Health oversees the inspection of restaurants and food service locations, public swimming pools and hot tubs, and businesses providing personal services (such as beauty salons, barber and tattoo shops). Also oversees the drinking water program, tobacco enforcement, communicable disease control (enterics), West Nile Virus programs and onsite sewage management. Food Safety Program regulates the source, storage, handling, preparation and transportation of food intended for public consumption. Services include inspection and licensing of food service establishments, responding to public complaints concerning suspected illness derived from consumption of food products, facilitating emergency food recalls, enforcing food control legislation and promoting food safety courses. Recreational Water Safety monitors recreational beaches during the swimming season, and inspects and approves commercial pools and hot tubs
